Unfortunately, you cannot swim in the pool at the bottom of the Manoa Falls hike. The trail is less than a mile one-way, but there will be some pausing to let other hikers pass. The path is nice and obvious, there is a ton of shade (as with all of Oahu’s waterfall hikes), and the falls themselves are absolutely stunning.īasically, it’s an easy waterfall hike on Oahu, and it should take you around 45 minutes to reach the waterfall. If you’ve done one of the waterfall hikes on Oahu, odds are you’ve done Manoa Falls. Ok, I’m All Set! Tell Me About These Oahu Waterfall Hikes! Manoa Falls If you would like to read a bit more on the bacteria, here’s a page from the CDC. Once I got a small cut from a rock in a waterfall pool and did not have any signs of leptospirosis. Personally, I have not heard of anyone actually getting leptospirosis on any of these hikes. While some cases of leptospirosis may have bad flu-like symptoms, others have no symptoms at all. Leptospirosis can only be harmful if it enters the body through an open cut (so if it’s scabbed over, you’re fine) or by drinking it. After further research, this is not exactly the case. When you start these hikes on Oahu, you will probably come across a sign that’ll tell you that you’ll get infected by a strain of bacteria called “leptospirosis” if you so much as touch the water. These bus-accessible Oahu waterfalls include Waimea Falls and Kapena Falls. However, if a car isn’t an option, there are a couple of waterfalls on the list below that are accessible by The Bus, Hawaii’s public bus system. The easiest way to get to the majority of Oahu waterfall hikes is by car. How Can I Get to The Oahu Waterfall Hikes? While you can use a plastic bag, you can also try this reusable bag and give it a good wash when you get back to where you’re staying. You don’t want to get that mud all over your car. A Washable Reusable Bag (Or A Plastic Bag)Īfter you’re done hiking, you’ll want a place to put your muddy athletic shoes. Recently, I’ve been putting my Fila Women’s Day Hiker Shoes to good use, and they’ve held up quite well. However, intense, professional hiking boots are not at all necessary. (I once was on one of these waterfall hikes and the literal soles of both of my shoes came off!) Your shoes will never fully recover from these hikes. Athletic ShoesĪ pair of athletic shoes that you can get VERY muddy would be ideal. Luckily, there are both traditional and natural options to help you ward off the little critters. So you really do need to buy some bug repellent of some sort. Sometimes I get lazy and don’t use bug repellent and I end up with bites on my arms and legs that don’t go away for a month. The still water in the rainforest-like environments around the Oahu waterfalls attracts a lot of bugs – especially mosquitos. Bug Repellentīug repellent is highly recommended. What Should I Bring to These Oahu Waterfall Hikes?īefore you get to any of the hikes, there are some items that you should bring with you (for waterfall hikes specifically). That said, the Oahu waterfall hikes are definitely worth a little bit of extra exercise. No, you have to go on a bit of a hike to reach any of our waterfalls on the island. On Oahu, we don’t have the pull-up-and-take-a-picture waterfalls that many of the other Hawaiian Islands do. Mozilla began sponsoring the project in 2009 as a part of the ongoing development of an experimental browser engine called Servo, which was officially announced by Mozilla in 2010. Rust grew out of a personal project begun in 2006 by Mozilla Research employee Graydon Hoare. Mozilla Foundation headquarters in Mountain View, California Origins (2006–2012) Rust has been noted for its growth as a newer language and has been the subject of academic programming languages research. In December 2022, it became the first language other than C and assembly to be supported in the development of the Linux kernel. Since the first stable release in May 2015, Rust has been adopted by companies including Amazon, Discord, Dropbox, Facebook ( Meta), Google ( Alphabet), and Microsoft. Mozilla officially sponsored the project in 2009. Software developer Graydon Hoare created Rust as a personal project while working at Mozilla Research in 2006. It is popularized for systems programming. Rust borrows ideas from functional programming, including static types, immutability, higher-order functions, and algebraic data types. To simultaneously enforce memory safety and prevent concurrent data races, its "borrow checker" tracks the object lifetime of all references in a program during compilation. It enforces memory safety-ensuring that all references point to valid memory-without requiring the use of a garbage collector or reference counting present in other memory-safe languages. But the foundation's mandate is to support the project, so it'd be a somewhat odd situation if they do find themselves in conflict.Rust is a multi-paradigm, general-purpose programming language that emphasizes performance, type safety, and concurrency. So far, as far as I know, there has not been any serious conflict between them, and it's not entirely clear to me what would happen if there was. They exist in parallel and are mostly-separate entities with mostly-separate areas of responsibility, though there are several people who have roles in both. The project does not take direction from the foundation, nor does the foundation take direction from the project. It's where a decision like "we should put telemetry in the compiler" would be made, not the foundation. The project is in practice responsible for all technical decision-making, in terms of what goes into the language, how the tools and processes work, what content is in the docs, what features to change and when, etc. They have their own processes and governance system (which they're currently in the process of fairly significantly overhauling after the previous generation of processes. The Rust project which is an informal (not a legal entity) collection of people (some employed by companies, some volunteers) who self-organize into teams (that mostly select their own future membership) who collaborate over the internet, each with their own area of responsibility. There's a fairly broad set of companies involved here: Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, Huawei, etc. It owns the trademarks and domain names, acts as a legal and administrative point of contact when one is needed, and has I think operational and funding responsibility for infrastructure (crates.io, CI, etc.) The foundation has members which are almost all corporate sponsors who donate money (and sometimes people) to further its mandate. The Rust foundation, which is a nonprofit general (delaware) corporation with bylaws, employees, a normal legal existence. Other answers here are imprecise and a bit misleading. "I just have to laugh - like, this is somebody who definitely was not uninformed in the company," Craig told Jarvis on "The Dropout."Ĭraig said he was astounded when he heard the part of Holmes' deposition where an SEC lawyer asked her about a specific text exchange with Balwani from Oct. It was something that former Theranos employee and senior software engineer Michael Craig found difficult to believe. In never-before-broadcasted depositions, attorneys for the Securities and Exchange Commission ask Holmes questions about whether she helped orchestrate an "elaborate, years-long fraud." During her deposition, Holmes kept repeating the same thing - variations of "I don't know specifically" or "I'm not sure" - more than 660 times. Under oath, Holmes' typical assured demeanor was replaced with timidness and she claimed ignorance to much of the goings on at the company. Their claims about their secret, groundbreaking technology that was made to patients, to investors and to the public, were under fire. Over three days for eight hours each day, SEC attorneys interrogated Holmes and Balwani separately. Theranos had to void tens of thousands of its test results, but still managed to keep its doors open.īut by summer 2017, the SEC was investigating Theranos, Holmes and Balwani. Regulators from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid determined Theranos' quality controls were so deficient they posed an immediate risk to patient health and safety. Investors and patients also were bringing their own class-action lawsuits. Walgreens and Theranos settled for an undisclosed sum with no finding or admission of liability. Walgreens had terminated its contract with Theranos in June 2016 and, eventually, sued for $140 million, claiming Theranos had "failed to meet the most basic quality standards and legal requirements of the contract," according to court filings. "I will say there are some very powerful people going after that poor woman, and she is doing such a great thing for humanity and we should all support her," Draper told Jarvis at the time.īy 2016, Holmes' group of supporters was shrinking. A series of explosive articles by Wall Street Journal investigative reporter John Carreyrou had pushed questions about whether Theranos' technology really worked into mainstream media coverage.īut even with all this happening, venture capitalist Tim Draper, one of Holmes' earliest investors, passionately defended her in 2016 when he spoke to ABC News Chief Business, Technology and Economics Correspondent, and host of "The Dropout," Rebecca Jarvis. The relationship was over, and the adoring publicity for her and her startup had been replaced with intense skepticism. I don't think it happened in one moment, but it was very clear that we were colleagues," Holmes said in her deposition. and the sort of romantic piece that was there at the very beginning died. "Once we started working together, it was a very intense working relationship. In Elizabeth Holmes' 2017 deposition with the Securities and Exchange Commission, obtained by ABC News and featured on "The Dropout," Holmes said her and Balwani's decision to end their relationship was mutual. And both when becoming a licensee and deploying the engine to a platform, a lot of what you are paying for in terms of money and system resources may not be beneficial for your game. However, Unreal licensing is expensive and requires a specific, if popular, kind of art production. The process they use for incorporating new middle-ware solutions (Speedtree, Kynagon, Beast, etc.), the symbiotic relationship they have with licensees (many engine modifications my by the licensee wind up becoming part of Unreal), and the commitment to multiplatform (included mobile) development should enable continued success with licensing. The new tech and the new gamepley direction make it look like the best is yet to come for ‘Metal Gear’.Įpic’s primary goal with Unreal Engine 4 is for the engine to be licensed by other companies. Every time it seems to have stumbled, it has just returned even stronger than before. Going all the way back to the MSX/NES era, this series has never failed to impress. If it’s not perceived as a success, more and more companies will withdraw from the competition of producing HD games.įor now, we can celebrate 25 years of the ‘Metal Gear’ franchise. Konami has put years into the FOX engine. However, subscribing to this kind of domino theory, wherein a change in philosophy and success go hand-in-hand, also means acknowledging the possibility of a negative outcome. Projects that now seem too expensive and difficult to undertake could be become reality, and could lead to years of games that push the limits and make for incredible HD content. The potential benefit for collaboration between internal development teams from companies like Capcom, Tecmo, Sony, Nintendo, etc. If Konami shifts to using a unified engine throughout its title production, other Japanese publisher/developers may follow suit. Konami also owns several other properties such as ‘Silent Hill’, ‘Castlevania’ and ‘Pro Evolution Soccer’ that may see future installments developed for the FOX engine. It seems clear that Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions will continue primarily to produce ‘Metal Gear’ titles, but with the FOX engine, their focus will no longer be on handheld platforms. It has already been rumored that the new ‘Zone of the Enders’ project could be built in the FOX engine. ‘Ground Zeroes’ also promises an open environment and gameplay that continues in earnest past being detected, which is all about getting more people to play and replay ‘Metal Gear’.īy targeting current consoles, the FOX engine (and new engines under development at other studios in the East and West) may continue to extend this generation’s lifecycle. The FOX engine is meant in part to bring in the 360 and PC crowd from the get-go. The ‘Metal Gear’ series, despite its popularity, is still a niche series. ‘Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes’ looks to sport the visual extravagance of ‘Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’ (one of the few console games rendered in true 1080p) while incorporating gameplay concepts and the character focus of ‘Peace Walker’, which was originally a PSP title. This kind of focus means that it will be designed to deploy on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms today, and to be ready to transition to tomorrow’s platforms as well. Indeed, the stated intent of the FOX engine is to be a multi-platform engine and development toolset from its inception. This real-time demonstration is running off a PC. Specifically, look at how everything lights, the detail in the characters matched against the complexity of the animations, and keep in mind that this is not pre-rendered. In that case, just focus on the following video as a demonstration of its engine. Unless you’re current on your ‘Metal Gear’ mythos and the growing backstory for Big Boss (‘Metal Gear Solid 3’, ‘Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker’), the intricacies of the new game’s plot will likely escape you. The tone of the main story is melodramatic and the tone of the substories you encounter is largely comedic. Outside of trying to remember a few too many names, I had no problem following the plot. For players new to the series, the game contains about thirty minutes of recap videos explaining the events of the first two games, and as Yakuza 3 was my first time with the series, I was grateful. The whole series has a fairly relaxed pace, both in the way cutscenes are played and the way you explore the city, so it's not what you're looking for if you want a heavy action game. The story is slowly paced and there's nothing wrong with that. The head of Kiryu's former Yakuza family is shot, his father seems to have returned from the dead, and international conspiracies begin to unfold. The story later expands beyond Okinawa and into Kamurocho, a seedy district of Tokyo that served as the setting of the first two games in the series. If that sounds boring to you, you're going to hate the first three hours of the game, because that's the main content of the opening act. Their peaceful life is uprooted when a land development project threatens to purchase the land Kiryu's orphanage is on. The star of the series is Kazuma Kiryu, a former Yakuza member who now lives a quiet life running an orphanage in Okinawa with Haruka, who is essentially his adopted daughter. What you do while wandering couldn't be more different. The only similarity between the two series is that both set you down in a large, crime-ridden city and let you wander freely. When he does, the game makes a very big deal out of it. You don't drive cars, you can't terrorize people on the streets, and it's extremely rare that the hero kills anyone. If anything, the series is a spiritual successor to Sega's own Shenmue series. Some people see "open-world game about mobsters" and assume the Yakuza series is a Grand Theft Auto knockoff, which couldn't be further from the truth. There was alo some controversy from fans around its release, as Sega announced in advance that certain content would be cut from the North American release. Yakuza 3 was released in Japan in 2009, and it wasn't until a whole year later that a translated version was released in North America. Negative comments from Sega of America didn't help matters. Yakuza 1 and 2 received Western releases (the first game is the only one to receive an English dub), but Kenzan never left Japan, leading some to worry that the series was dead internationally. It follows 2008's Kenzan, a spinoff set in early 17th Japan. Yakuza 3 is the third main-series installment of Sega's open-world tough guy games. |
